USDA is your partner in prevention. Poultry growers with 500 or more birds may be eligible for assessments and other support that help strengthen biosecurity and protect flock health.
Biosecurity Assessments
USDA offers free biosecurity assessments to help poultry growers address biosecurity risks at their facility. USDA-trained staff will visit your facility and identify actionable strategies that you can implement to strengthen your operation’s defenses against disease. Additionally, USDA will share up to 75 percent of the costs to fix the highest-risk biosecurity concerns identified by the assessments. Some examples of available assessments include:
Wildlife Biosecurity Assessment
APHIS Wildlife Services will conduct on-farm assessments to identify how wildlife could spread disease to your flocks. They will recommend facility repairs and options for managing wildlife to protect your flock.
Biosecurity Incentive-Focused Assessment
APHIS Veterinary Services will work with you to review structural and operational biosecurity plans and practices. They will recommend strategies to strengthen your biosecurity practices to reduce the spread of disease.

Indemnity and Compensation
If your flock is affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), USDA may provide financial support for certain losses and response costs. This can include payment for birds and eggs that must be destroyed, as well as approved costs related to depopulation, disposal, contaminated materials, and virus elimination.
Because HPAI can spread quickly, it’s important to report sick birds right away and start the assistance process as soon as possible.
